Our History

Founding in Aklavik

The Royal Canadian Legion McInnes Branch 220 was established in Aklavik, Northwest Territories.

Building Community in Aklavik

Events, fundraisers, and remembrance activities helped strengthen both veteran support and community life in the Mackenzie Delta.

Re-Chartered in Inuvik

When the Canadian government relocated much of Aklavik’s population to the new town of Inuvik, the Legion followed.

Expanding Activities

The branch became a cornerstone of Inuvik social life, hosting dances, fundraisers, and commemorations.

Supporting Veterans & Families

Branch 220 carried forward its legacy by offering programs, youth engagement, and charitable support across the region.

Tradition and Renewal

The branch adapted to modern needs while preserving Legion traditions. It deepened its role as both a veterans’ organization.

Honouring Legacy, Building Community

Today, McInnes Branch 220 continues to thrive. From meat draws and Chase the Ace raffles to remembrance services and outreach, the branch honours the sacrifices of veterans.

Our Vision

McInnes Legion Branch 220 envisions a future where veterans and their families are always honoured, supported, and remembered. As a community anchor in the North, we strive to create a space where the legacy of service lives on — not only in ceremonies and traditions but in the everyday connections we build with one another. Our vision is to foster unity between veterans, their families, and the wider community by offering a place of belonging, respect, and purpose. We aim to be a hub where northern culture and remembrance come together, ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are never forgotten and that the values of service, resilience, and compassion guide us into the future.

Our Mission

Our mission is to serve those who have served — and to strengthen the community that surrounds them. We are committed to honouring the service and sacrifice of Canada’s veterans through remembrance events, public education, and community engagement. We support the well-being of veterans and their families by offering advocacy, social programs, and a welcoming space where they can find connection and care. At the same time, we are deeply invested in building a stronger community for all Inuvik residents by providing opportunities for gathering, volunteering, learning, and celebration. Whether through commemorations, partnerships, or grassroots initiatives, everything we do is guided by respect for our past and hope for our shared future.

Our Approach

We are a volunteer-driven organization rooted in service, tradition, and community. Guided by the voices of our northern community, we deliver programs shaped by local needs and realities. Many of our members are veterans or their families, united by a commitment to inclusion and cultural respect. By partnering with local groups, schools, and governments, we strengthen our impact and foster connection. Through remembrance, support, and service, we honour Canada’s military legacy while building a strong future for the North.
